So you want to know how to get your products, services and / or brand featured in a magazine?

Just like with most things these days, there are many ways to go about it. Still there are 5 main principles to remember when reaching out.

5 Principles to Remember When Reaching Out

Always Start with Your Story Not Just a Product or Service

Yes, you really, really want to sell a product or service. Ultimately, that's what you would like. Still, you have to be mindful that you are probably one of millions who want to get their product or service featured. Do your due diligence and really dig deep to understand your personal story in relation to the product / service you offer. Why did you create your product or service? What impact do you hope to make on your consumers or the world in general? What's the long-term vision for your product, service or brand?

Action Step:

  • Submit a story proposal to the relevant persons (usually a magazine editor) with a "tasty" subject line. Keep the story to the point, feature highlighted points and the value the story would bring to the magazine and its readers.

Think Value, Value and More Value

What value would you be bringing to the magazine if they feature you / your story? Do you offer a heartwarming story with your brand? Will your product / service help sell more magazines? Are you offering the editor some free goods in exchange for a review? Is your story aligned with the mission and values of the magazine you are looking to be featured in? What are you doing for the magazine itself. The more you focus on what value you offer, the better your chances of getting featured.

Action Step:

  • Following up from the first principle, know what value you are bringing to the magazine editors and its readers, not just your brand and business. Discover 3-5 valuable things that your story / feature would add to the magazine itself, and be sure to share that when you "pitch" your story and the brand that comes from it.

Making Connections

Look up various magazines that you would like your brand to get featured in (preferably magazines that are aligned with your brand and mission).  In media, you often reach out to the producers of a brand, a television show, etc. The "producer" of a magazine is usually an editor, whether contributing or Editor in Chief. Build genuine relationships with these people by scheduling a virtual coffee chat, offering to buy coffee, lunch or dinner or by offering a free service or sample or your product in exchange for a feature. If you don't get a response, continue to follow up or ask those who work closely with them to schedule you a meeting (and it doesn't hurt to offer an incentive (free product, service, etc.)  those helping you secure the meeting as well.)

Look for the 'Advertise with Us' Link

Most magazine websites have an advertise with us or sponorships link. Look for that link to get a product or service featured and see pricing breakdown and next steps for getting featured.
